The UK government has announced a ban on certain single-use plastic items from 1 October 2023. The ban includes plates, bowls, trays, containers, glass, and cutlery. The ban applies to all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable, and recycled items wholly or partly made from plastic, including coating or lining. The ban also includes online and over-the-counter sales and supply items from new and existing stock. The ban on single-use plastic plates, trays, and bowls does not apply to packaging (pre-filled or filled at the point of sale).

The ban on single-use plastic cutlery and balloon sticks has no exemptions. The ban on polystyrene food and drink containers applies to ready-to-consume food and drink in polystyrene containers, including in polystyrene cups. The ban does not apply to food or drink in polystyrene containers that need further preparation before consumption. Local authorities will carry out inspections to ensure compliance with the rules.
